Museum Santa Maria della Scala, the medieval jewel in Siena

Categories: Siena, Special local things, the best of the better, Tuscany

The historic centre of Siena has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. You can feel a marvellous experience just strolling within the medieval walls of the city.

Siena always has something to offer. One of its jewels is the Museo Santa Maria de la Scala. It is made up of a set of buildings that, iniatally, were one of the first hospitals in Europe. Nowadays the visit involves entering a maze from which you will exit through a different door to the entrance while traveling in time.

The surface area is 10000 square meters divided into several levels where you can find different treasures: frescoes by Simone Martini, Ambrogio e Pietro Lorenzeti and Sebastiano Conca; relics of great value, original "fonte gaia" of Japopo della Quercia, an archaeological museum, a church, an oratory...

Santa Maria della Scala contains several museums under its huge monumental complex that make it unique. The visit helps to understand the beauty and art of Siena.
